Around the Parish – February 23, 2025

Greetings from the Eternal City!

As I continue my trip to Italy with my mom, please know that I am keeping you all in my prayers. I look forward to being back with you next weekend! A heartfelt thank-you to Father Ray for covering the parish in my absence.

Vacation Bible School Planning Begins!

The first Vacation Bible School preparation meeting is scheduled for this Wednesday, February 26, at 6:30 PM in the parish conference room. If you are able to help with this wonderful program, please join us! A special thanks to Mrs. Linda Oliver for her dedication in leading this effort.

24 Hours for the Lord – Sign Up for Adoration

Sign-ups for 24 Hours for the Lord remain available in the main vestibule. Please consider committing to one hour of Adoration to ensure that all 24 hours are covered in prayer before the Eucharist.

Special Praise & Worship Holy Hour – March 21 at 7 PM

As part of 24 Hours for the Lord, I invite you to a special Praise & Worship Holy Hour on Friday, March 21, at 7 PM in the church. Miss Gabrielle Herndon, Youth Minister for the Shenango Valley parishes, will lead us in music for this beautiful time of prayer and adoration.

These Praise & Worship Holy Hours are traveling to different churches in our area, and I am thrilled that our parish will be hosting one! Even if you’ve already signed up for an hour of adoration, I encourage you to join us for this powerful evening of prayer. Following the Holy Hour, we will gather in Gallagher Hall for refreshments and fellowship. I hope to see you there!

Lent is Almost Here!

Lent is quickly approaching! In just a week and a half, we will enter this sacred season with Ash Wednesday. Next weekend, more details about our Lenten parish schedule will be available in the bulletin. In the meantime, visit our parish website for up-to-date information on all our upcoming events.

Take a Bulletin Home!

There is so much valuable information in our bulletin each week! It takes me roughly eight hours to put everything together, and my hope is to provide both important parish news and spiritual insights—especially as we prepare for Lent. Please be sure to take a bulletin home with you!

Here are a few thoughts for the week ahead:

To receive joy, we must first give it; to keep joy, we must share it. Let your joy be found in the journey—not in some distant goal. While we cannot cure the world of sorrows, we can choose to live in joy. Joy is not the absence of suffering but the presence of God. True happiness comes from the joy of deeds well done. The joy we experience has little to do with our circumstances and everything to do with where we set our hearts.

The Power and Tradition of Mass Intentions

The Mass is considered the greatest prayer of intercession in the Church. This is because it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father, making present the Paschal Mystery of His death and resurrection. Traditionally, a Priest may be requested to offer a Mass for a specific intention, even if the requester cannot be physically present.

Offering Masses for the Deceased:

Having a Mass offered for a deceased person is an ancient and commendable practice. A Mass is offered to pray for the departed, that they may find peace in heaven. Since each Mass holds infinite value, requesting one or several Masses is of tremendous benefit to the person prayed for, as well as their family, who can take comfort in knowing that their intention is united with the prayers of the Church.

The Mass: Center of Christian Life:

Every Mass is a precious gift from God. It is the center of the Church’s life, known as “the source and summit of the Christian life,” because in the celebration of the Mass, we are brought back to Jesus’ Last Supper, the first Mass. We consciously recall the love of God poured out for us through the life, death, and resurrection of His only Son, Jesus Christ. At each Mass, all the intentions of God’s people, both living and deceased, are included. As Pope Paul VI noted in his motu proprio “Firma in Traditione,” the faithful, moved by an ecclesial and religious sense, join their own sacrifices to the Eucharistic sacrifice, participating more intensely and supporting the Church’s needs, especially its ministers.

Requesting a Mass Intention:

Anyone may request a Mass Intention for a living person, a deceased person, members of a family, or a special intention appropriate to the celebration of the Eucharist, such as World Peace, Vocations, or Respect for Life. The Church allows only one intention per Mass.

Offering a Mass Stipend:

The normal stipend offering for a Mass is $10. However, a Mass Offering can be more or less than the suggested amount, depending on the financial position of the person requesting the Mass. Envelopes for Mass intention requests are available at the entrances of the church. These envelopes can be placed in the collection basket or returned to the parish office. The requester may also ask for a card to be sent to notify someone that a Mass Intention has been requested (one card per intention). Please note that the name of the person(s) requesting the Mass is not announced.

Blessings and Challenges: The Sermon on the Plain

This Sunday’s Gospel presents Luke’s version of the Beatitudes, commonly referred to as the Sermon on the Plain. Unlike Matthew’s more familiar account, Luke’s Beatitudes are direct and accompanied by corresponding “woes” that highlight the stark contrast between those who seek fulfillment in God and those who rely solely on worldly comforts. Jesus blesses the poor, the hungry, the sorrowful, and the persecuted—not because suffering itself is good, but because God promises to fill and redeem them. At the same time, He warns the rich, the satisfied, and the comfortable, cautioning against complacency and self-reliance that can lead us away from God. This Gospel challenges us to examine where we place our trust—do we cling to the fleeting security of this world, or do we seek the lasting joy found in Christ?

24 Hours for the Lord – Adoration Sign-Ups Available

We are still in need of adorers for our upcoming 24 Hours for the Lord Adoration. This is a beautiful opportunity to spend quiet time with Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. Please consider signing up for an hour—whether during the day or in the quiet of the night—so that we may ensure continuous prayer during this special time of grace.

Vigil Candle Price Adjustment

Beginning immediately, due to rising costs, the price of votive candles in the church will be adjusted. The votive candles in front of the Mary and St. Joseph altars will increase from $3 to $5 per candle, and the tea light candles by the Sacred Heart statue will increase from $0.25 to $0.50. This change is necessary to continue providing these sacramentals while covering the increased cost of supplies. Thank you for your understanding and for your continued devotion to this meaningful tradition of prayer and remembrance.

First VBS Planning Meeting – February 26

Our first Vacation Bible School planning meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 26 at 6:30 PM in the parish conference room. If you are interested in helping with VBS this summer—whether in teaching, crafts, music, or logistics—please join us for this important meeting!

A Pilgrimage to Rome and the Holy Doors

On Monday, February 17, my mother and I will be traveling to Rome for a few days. I want to assure you that I will be praying for all of you in a special way as I visit the Eternal City, especially at the tombs of the apostles and the great basilicas of our faith.

As we continue celebrating the Jubilee Year of Hope, one of the most profound traditions of a Jubilee is the Holy Door. Found in each of the four major basilicas of Rome, the Holy Door is normally sealed shut but is opened during a Jubilee Year as a sign of God’s mercy and the call to conversion. Pilgrims who pass through the Holy Door with a spirit of faith, repentance, and prayer receive a special plenary indulgence, a reminder that God’s grace is always open to us.

I hope to share pictures and updates on Facebook throughout the week, so I encourage you to follow along online! Please pray for safe travels, and be assured of my prayers for you as well.

Here are a few thoughts for the week ahead:

Our attitude and interactions are like price tags: they show how valuable we are. Success occurs when our goals are bigger than our excuses. Self discipline is the bridge between our goals and our accomplishments. Every kind action that we perform is a vote for the kind of person we wish to become.

24 Hours for the Lord: Eucharistic Adoration

Please consider signing up for an hour of Eucharistic Adoration as part of our celebration of 24 Hours for the Lord on March 21-22, 2025. There are still many available time slots, and all are encouraged to take part in this time of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Sign-ups are available online through the parish website or in the main vestibule of the church.

Summer Ministries Schedule

The summer ministry schedule (May–August 2025) will be prepared in the coming weeks. Current Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors registered on Ministry Scheduler Pro will receive an email requesting their availability for these months. Additional volunteers are always welcome for these ministries. Anyone interested in serving as a Lector or Eucharistic Minister should contact the parish office as soon as possible so that training sessions can be scheduled.

Nursing Home Visitation: More Ministers Needed

There is also a need for additional Eucharistic Ministers to visit local nursing homes. This is a meaningful way to bring the presence of Christ to those who are unable to attend Mass. Participation in this ministry does not require serving as a Eucharistic Minister at Mass, and training will be provided at a later date. Those interested should contact the parish office.

Thank you for your understanding and continued devotion to this meaningful tradition of prayer and remembrance.

Rosary

Just a quick note that on Wednesdays after Daily Mass, the Rosary will be said in Church. We encourage everyone to come and join us in this special prayer. The Rosary will continue to be prayed at 4:30pm on Saturday, before our 5pm vigil mass. Volunteers are needed as the Saturday Rosary Leader. If you wish to lead the rosary, please contact the parish office at your earliest convenience.

Vacation Bible School 2025

Looking ahead, Vacation Bible School is scheduled for July 14–18, 2025. Registration will open on March 1, 2025. This year’s theme is “Egypt: Joseph’s Journey from Prison to Palace”. More details will be shared in the coming weeks.

Here are a few thoughts for the week ahead:

No amount of guilt can change yesterday and no amount of anxiety can change the future. Let your faith empower you to be the kind of Christian that makes the sun shine brighter for all those you encounter. If you need a confidence booster, then remind yourself of all the difficult things you’ve endured and overcome.

Around the Parish – January 28, 2024

As we stand on the precipice of the last few days of January 2024, it’s a moment to pause and reflect on the swift passage of time. It seems like just yesterday we were ushering in the new year with hope and resolutions. Yet here we are, already bidding farewell to the first month of the year. Time, as they say, waits for no one, and as we navigate through the days, let’s take a moment to appreciate the journey so far and embrace the possibilities that lie ahead in the coming months.

Eucharistic Ministers for Nursing Home Visits:

This Thursday, February 1 at 11:00am, I ask anyone that is interested in taking communion to the nursing homes to come to a meeting in the parish office conference room. If you are unable to make it, please contact me as soon as possible!

Snow Removal:

As no one has responded to our advertisement, we are STILL in need of someone to shovel and spread salt around our church campus. THIS IS A PAYING JOB!!! Please help us find someone who would be able to assist us in this task.

Spring Bible Study Registration:

Our Spring Bible Study awaits, and I encourage you to register by Monday, February 5, 2024. The cost is $20 per person, and your timely registration ensures that all necessary books can be purchased. We benefit from a parish discount, so let’s delve into the Word together.

Vacation Bible School Planning Meeting:

A reminder that our planning meeting for VBS 2024 is THIS Wednesday, January 31 at 6:00 pm. If you are able to help in any capacity, please plan on attending this meeting.

Easter Lottery Baskets Raffle:

Speaking of time flying, it is already time to think about collecting lottery scratch off tickets for our Easter Raffle! In the coming weeks, we will be mailing out the raffle tickets, but in the meantime, we need to collect lottery tickets. As always, you can turn them in by dropping them in the collection basket, or dropping them off at or mailing them to the parish office. Thank you again for your continued generosity!

The feast of Saint Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, is next Saturday, February 3. We will have throat blessings next weekend after every mass.

Here are a few thoughts for the week ahead:

You are the artist of your life; don’t give the brush to anyone else. Family life is changed by our example, not our complaints. Sometimes what looks like an obstacle is actually a gift that is meant to move us in a different direction. Don’t believe everything you see on social media; no one is posting their failures.

Pax et Bonum, Fr. Andy

Around the Parish – January 21, 2024

Before you know it, we will already be back in Lent. The Gospel this weekend gives us a preview of Lent and our expectations. Jesus calls us to repentance and firm faith in the Gospel. Let our prayer this week be focused on His Good News and the grace of the Sacraments.

Eucharistic Ministers for Nursing Home Visits:

On Thursday, February 1 at 11:00am, I ask anyone that is interested in taking communion to the nursing homes to come to a meeting in the parish office conference room. If you work during that time or are unable to make it, please contact me at your earliest convenience. Even if you haven’t contacted the parish office yet and are even just interested in this ministry, I ask that you come to this meeting. As always, if you have any questions, please call the parish office.

Snow Removal:

I must have jinxed us, as the snow and cold came in this past week! We are in need of someone to shovel and spread salt around our church campus.

A reminder that our planning meeting for VBS 2024 is Wednesday, January 31 at 6:00 pm. If you are able to help in any capacity, please plan on attending this meeting. If you are unable to be present at this meeting, please contact the parish office. Thank you to all our volunteers! Without your “yes” we would not be able to have programs like this available in our church!

Mass Schedule:

THIS WEEK weekday masses will be in the office Conference Room. We will be rewaxing the sanctuary this week.

Here are a few thoughts for the week ahead:

Never let the ugly in others compromise the beauty in you. Never be a prisoner of your past, It was a life lesson, not a life sentence. Ideal families only exist in art and literature. All families have their crosses. What differentiates families is the number of members who are willing to lend a hand in trials and the number who choose to be mere spectators .

Around the Parish – January 14, 2024

Returning to the time throughout the year in our Church calendar, we encounter today the words of Saint John’s Gospel that we hear during every mass: “Ecce Agnus Dei,” “Behold the Lamb of God.” These words resonate through the sacred space of our worship, inviting us to reflect on the profound symbolism they carry. In the rhythm of our liturgy, they serve as a constant reminder to behold Jesus, the Lamb of God, in the subtle and hidden facets of our lives. As we engage in today’s liturgy, let us cultivate a mindful awareness, seeking the presence of Jesus in the quiet, often overlooked moments, and embracing the profound significance of his divine sacrifice.

Eucharistic Ministers for Nursing Home Visits:

I hope that you had an opportunity to pray about helping us with bringing the Holy Eucharist to those who are in our local nursing homes. We hope to be able to bring communion to our Catholic Residents every week in the four nursing homes in our parish. If you feel called to help in this important ministry, please contact the parish office at your earliest convenience. We will schedule an informational meeting once we gather names of volunteers.

Snow Removal:

Praise God, we have had very little snow removal needed so far this winter season, but as we all know, winter is just beginning. We are in need of someone to shovel and spread salt around our church campus.

Although it may seem distant, Summer 2024 Vacation Bible School is on the horizon. Join our planning meeting on Wednesday, January 31, at 6 pm. Your input and enthusiasm are crucial to making this experience memorable for our children. Please mark your calendars and attend if you can.

Mass Schedule:

The week of January 23-26, weekday masses will be in the office Conference Room. We will be doing maintenance in church that will prohibit mass for the week from being in church. Also on this Thursday, January 18, there is no mass at Immaculate Heart due to a meeting I have in Erie that day.

Here are a few thoughts for the week ahead:

A friend is one who strengthens you with prayer; blesses you with love and encourages you with hope. Life is full of give and take. Give thanks to God and show appreciation to others and take nothing for granted

Pax et Bonum, Fr. Andy

Around the Parish – May 14, 2023

A very happy and blessed Mother’s Day to all of our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and anyone to whom has shown us motherly love. Know of my prayers, love, and admiration for all of you!

Last weekend, I mentioned two events that our parish will host. In the recent past, Father Matt held a Procession of the Blessed Sacrament on Corpus Christi Sunday. Eucharistic Processions will be occurring all over the Diocese of Erie on this special Sunday. This year, our parish will host the Deanery Eucharistic Procession, which invites parishioners from all over our area to participate.

The second event will begin also on Corpus Christi Sunday and will continue through the following Tuesday, June 13. Each day, following the last mass of the day, the Eucharist will be exposed for adoration until 7pm each night. At 7pm, we will celebrate evening prayer, and within evening prayer, a special homily will be given. Our preacher for our celebration will be Father Joseph Petrone. He will be preaching on the Hearts of the Holy Family. We are in need of volunteers to sign up for an hour of adoration during the entire time that the Eucharist is exposed. A minimum of two volunteers are needed for each hour that the Eucharist is exposed. In the back vestibule of church, and on our website, you can sign up to volunteer for an hour. If you wish to volunteer, please contact the parish office as soon as possible so that we can schedule a meeting to begin preparations.

Thank you goes out to all the amazing volunteers who came to help with the first Plant and Garden Sale. The sale raised $1,424 for our parish. Between the sale and other generous donations, we were able to raise enough money to cover the cost of the replacement refrigerator for Gallagher Hall.

Here’s a thought for your week: Never take someone’s feeling for granted because you never know how much courage it took for him or her to express them to you. Life is too short to be constantly worrying. Let go of the stress and realize you’re blessed.

Pax et Bonum, Fr. Andy

Thank you to our amazing crew who helped work the First Annual Plant and Garden Sale!

The IHM 300 Club will be a special 6 month raffle, and more information about this can be found in today’s bulletin, as well as on our website. Tickets will begin being sold after all the masses. Tickets can also always be purchased through the parish office.

Around the Parish – May 7, 2023

Next Sunday is Mother’s Day, and so to honor our Blessed Mother, we will crown her during the weekend masses at the beginning of mass. Flower vases will be placed around the statue of Mary that  is placed in front of the altar. If you want to add any flowers before mass to these vases in honor of the Blessed Mother, feel free! All are invited to participate!

As mentioned at all the masses last weekend, this year we will host Vacation Bible School. Vacation Bible School is open for all children registered for Preschool through Eighth Grade for the 2023-24 school year. All high school students looking for volunteer/service hours can come as well to help out! The more the merrier! We have chosen to schedule our VBS in the evenings from 5:30-8p to accommodate parents and volunteers who have to work during the day. Many of those who wish to volunteer cannot take a week off work to help, and so we are trying an evening time to assist with others’ schedules. The theme for this year is Splash Canyon: God’s Promise on Life’s Wild Ride. Thank you to Mrs. Linda Oliver and her crew for organizing this opportunity for our parish and community! For more information, please visit our website at https://ihmercer.org/vbs.

Thank you to everyone who came out to help at the Plant and Garden Sale. More information will be given in the coming weeks about the success of the event.

Reminder for Parish Council that we have a meeting scheduled for this Thursday at 6pm in the parish office conference room.

We are still selling tickets for the 300 club! As of writing this article, we have sold 130 tickets, nearing the half-way mark! Please help us spread the word to sell the remaining tickets. More information on the 300 club can be found on the website at https://ihmercer.org/300-club.

Here’s a thought for your week: Family is that place where love begins and never ends. Family provides the anchor when life storms rage around us. Family extends beyond our biology, and into our relationships that fill our day.
