Corpus Christi Sunday

This weekend the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, commonly known as Corpus Christi. It is a day when we give special thanks to God for the incredible gift of the Holy Eucharist.

At every Mass, bread and wine become the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ. This is not merely a symbol or a reminder of something that happened long ago. The Eucharist is the Real Presence of Christ among us. Through this great sacrament, Our Lord fulfills His promise to remain with His Church always, nourishing us with His very life and drawing us into deeper communion with Him and with one another.

The Eucharist is the source and summit of our Catholic faith. Every ministry of the Church, every act of charity, every prayer, and every mission finds its strength and purpose in the altar. It is here that heaven touches earth. It is here that Christ offers Himself to the Father for our salvation and gives Himself to us as food for the journey.

Corpus Christi is also an opportunity for us to reflect on our own devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. Do we prepare ourselves well to receive Holy Communion? Do we spend time with Jesus in prayer before the tabernacle? Do we recognize the tremendous gift that is offered to us each time we attend Mass? The more we grow in love for the Eucharist, the more we grow in love for Christ Himself.

As we celebrate this beautiful feast, let us renew our gratitude for the gift of the Holy Eucharist and ask the Lord to deepen our faith in His Real Presence. May every Mass we attend draw us closer to Him and strengthen us to live as His disciples in the world.

Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School is quickly approaching, and we need your help! At the moment, registration numbers are quite low, but we know there are many children in our parish who would enjoy this wonderful week of faith, fun, and fellowship. VBS is open to children entering first grade and above. Registration forms are available at the entrances of the church and online at ihmercer.org/vbs. Please register as soon as possible so we can adequately prepare for all who plan to attend.

Here’s a thought for your week ahead:

If you wait until you’re ready, you’ll spend your whole life waiting. Worry is interest paid on a debt you may never owe. The grass is greener where you water it. Don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do. A year from now you’ll wish you had started today.

The Power and Tradition of Mass Intentions

The Mass is considered the greatest prayer of intercession in the Church. This is because it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father, making present the Paschal Mystery of His death and resurrection. Traditionally, a Priest may be requested to offer a Mass for a specific intention, even if the requester cannot be physically present.

Offering Masses for the Deceased:

Having a Mass offered for a deceased person is an ancient and commendable practice. A Mass is offered to pray for the departed, that they may find peace in heaven. Since each Mass holds infinite value, requesting one or several Masses is of tremendous benefit to the person prayed for, as well as their family, who can take comfort in knowing that their intention is united with the prayers of the Church.

The Mass: Center of Christian Life:

Every Mass is a precious gift from God. It is the center of the Church’s life, known as “the source and summit of the Christian life,” because in the celebration of the Mass, we are brought back to Jesus’ Last Supper, the first Mass. We consciously recall the love of God poured out for us through the life, death, and resurrection of His only Son, Jesus Christ. At each Mass, all the intentions of God’s people, both living and deceased, are included. As Pope Paul VI noted in his motu proprio “Firma in Traditione,” the faithful, moved by an ecclesial and religious sense, join their own sacrifices to the Eucharistic sacrifice, participating more intensely and supporting the Church’s needs, especially its ministers.

Requesting a Mass Intention:

Anyone may request a Mass Intention for a living person, a deceased person, members of a family, or a special intention appropriate to the celebration of the Eucharist, such as World Peace, Vocations, or Respect for Life. The Church allows only one intention per Mass.

Offering a Mass Stipend:

The normal stipend offering for a Mass is $10. However, a Mass Offering can be more or less than the suggested amount, depending on the financial position of the person requesting the Mass. Envelopes for Mass intention requests are available at the entrances of the church. These envelopes can be placed in the collection basket or returned to the parish office. The requester may also ask for a card to be sent to notify someone that a Mass Intention has been requested (one card per intention). Please note that the name of the person(s) requesting the Mass is not announced.

Trinity Sunday

This weekend the Church celebrates the great feast of the Most Holy Trinity — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. While the mystery of the Trinity is beyond our full human understanding, it reminds us of one of the most important truths of our faith: that God is a communion of perfect love. We are created in that love and invited to share in it. May this feast day remind us to deepen our relationship with the Lord and to reflect His love within our families, our parish, and our community.

300 Club Tickets Available

300 Club tickets remain available, and we encourage everyone to purchase their tickets as soon as possible. This important fundraiser helps provide the necessary financial support to keep our parish operating and continuing its many ministries and programs. Your participation truly makes a difference and is a direct investment in the life and future of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish. Thank you for your continued generosity and support.

Handicapped Entrance

Thankfully, the recent good weather has allowed work to begin on the replacement of our handicapped entrance. The old canopy over the ramp has now been removed, and demolition of the existing ramp and sidewalk should begin shortly. For everyone’s safety, please avoid the south side of the church while construction is underway. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue these much-needed improvements to our parish facilities.

Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to leave undone forever. You cannot build a reputation on what you are merely going to do. Define your own life — do not let others write your script for you.

Pentecost Sunday

As we celebrate Pentecost Sunday, we recall the powerful moment when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, filling them with courage, wisdom, and zeal to proclaim the Gospel to the world. Pentecost is often called the “birthday of the Church,” because it marks the moment when the fearful disciples were transformed into bold witnesses of Christ. The same Holy Spirit poured out upon the Apostles is given to us through Baptism and Confirmation. Today is an opportunity for each of us to pray once again: “Come, Holy Spirit!” May the Spirit renew our hearts, strengthen our faith, and guide our parish to live more fully as disciples of Jesus Christ.

Handicapped Entrance

Last weekend, I announced that work would soon begin on the replacement of the church’s handicapped entrance. This important project is intended to address several safety and accessibility concerns that have developed over time. The existing ramp and stairs have become unsafe due to the flagstone surface that was added over them, and the current entrance door does not meet ADA accessibility standards because of its narrow width. In addition, the existing canopy has begun causing damage to the exterior wall of the church and will therefore be removed as part of the project.

The work will include the replacement of the ramp, stairs, and entrance door, along with the installation of a new automatic door opener to make access to the church easier and safer for everyone. Work was scheduled to begin on Tuesday and, as of the writing of this column, everything remains on schedule. Please keep this project in your prayers, especially for good weather and for the safe and timely completion of the work.

300 Club Tickets Available

Our 300 Club fundraiser is still underway, and we are continuing to work toward our goal of selling all 300 tickets. This fundraiser provides important support for the ongoing needs of our parish while also offering participants chances to win throughout the year. If you have not yet purchased a ticket, we encourage you to do so soon. Thank you for your continued generosity and support of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish.

Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School is quickly approaching, and we are looking forward to another joyful week of faith, fun, and friendship for the children of our parish and community. VBS is a wonderful opportunity for our young people to deepen their relationship with Jesus through prayer, music, games, crafts, and engaging activities centered on our Catholic faith. We encourage parents and grandparents to make this a priority part of their summer plans.

Registration is now open, and we encourage families to sign up as soon as possible so that we can adequately prepare materials and supplies for all participants. Registration forms are available at the doors of the church, or you may register online at ihmercer.org/vbs. The registration deadline is June 25, 2026. There is a $10 registration fee per child to help offset the cost of supplies and activities. We hope many of our children will join us for this exciting week of faith and fellowship!

Congratulations to our First Communicant

This weekend, we rejoice with Mr. Shay Leckenby as he receives his First Holy Communion at our 10:00 AM Mass. This is a beautiful and important moment in his journey of faith, and we extend our heartfelt congratulations to him and his family.

We also offer our sincere gratitude to Mrs. Linda Oliver for her dedication as Shay’s Faith Formation teacher, and to his parents for the love, encouragement, and support they continue to provide as he grows in his relationship with Christ. Please keep Shay in your prayers as he receives Our Lord in the Eucharist for the very first time.

Faith Formation

As another year of Faith Formation comes to a close, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all of our teachers, volunteers, and staff who have helped make this year such a success. So much work happens behind the scenes through planning lessons, preparing activities, organizing schedules, and supporting our students throughout the year, and I am deeply grateful for the time and care that has been given to our young people.

A special word of thanks goes to Mr. Greg Cummings, our Faith Formation Director, for his continued leadership, dedication, and commitment to the growth of our program. Thank you to everyone who helped pass on the faith to the next generation.

Ascension Thursday – Holy Day of Obligation

Please note that Thursday, May 14, is the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord (Ascension Thursday), a Holy Day of Obligation, and all the faithful are required to attend Mass. We will celebrate Mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary at 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM, and at St. Columbkille at 12:00 Noon.

Basket Raffle Planning Meeting

All who would like to assist with the Basket Raffle for our upcoming Spaghetti Dinner are invited to a planning meeting on Thursday, May 21 at 6:00 PM in the parish conference room. Your help plays an important role in making this event a success, and all are welcome to participate.

Deacon Edgar’s Anniversary Mass

At all the masses last weekend, I mentioned that this year, our Deacon Edgar Gonzalez is celebrating 20 years as a deacon. Originally from the Cleveland Diocese, he will be honored at their ordination anniversary mass this Tuesday, May 5, 2026. The mass will take place at Saint Basil the Great Parish, 8700 Brecksville Road, Brecksville, Ohio at 6:00 PM. All are welcome to attend. As always, please congratulate our deacon on his anniversary! We are truly blessed to have him here in our parish!

Sharing Shed

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their continued participation in our parish Sharing Shed, from the volunteers who maintain the shed, to those who donate food, thank you! The Mass: Center of Christian Life:

Every Mass is a precious gift from God. It is the center of the Church’s life, known as “the source and summit of the Christian life,” because in the celebration of the Mass, we are brought back to Jesus’ Last Supper, the first Mass. We consciously recall the love of God poured out for us through the life, death, and resurrection of His only Son, Jesus Christ. At each Mass, all the intentions of God’s people, both living and deceased, are included. As Pope Paul VI noted in his motu proprio “Firma in Traditione,” the faithful, moved by an ecclesial and religious sense, join their own sacrifices to the Eucharistic sacrifice, participating more intensely and supporting the Church’s needs, especially its ministers.

Requesting a Mass Intention:

Anyone may request a Mass Intention for a living person, a deceased person, members of a family, or a special intention appropriate to the celebration of the Eucharist, such as World Peace, Vocations, or Respect for Life. The Church allows only one intention per Mass.

Offering a Mass Stipend:

The normal stipend offering for a Mass is $10. However, a Mass Offering can be more or less than the suggested amount, depending on the financial position of the person requesting the Mass. Envelopes for Mass intention requests are available at the entrances of the church. These envelopes can be placed in the collection basket or returned to the parish office. The requester may also ask for a card to be sent to notify someone that a Mass Intention has been requested (one card per intention). Please note that the name of the person(s) requesting the Mass is not announced.
